The best of VMD: Globe riders defy danger

7/31/2008

The look on Melvin Urias' face when his father told him it was time to take up the family business must have been priceless. That's because the Urias family business isn't as ordinary as most.

It's riding a motorcycle inside a giant ball of grated steel, built in the early 1900s in Brazil.

"I've ridden motorcycles since I was very young, but I always said I'd never ride in the globe, but somewhere along the line my dad asked me to practice, and it just went from there," Melvin says.

Four generations of Uriases have been riding inside the ball, sphere or "globe," as Melvin calls it after his performance at this year's AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in Lexington, Ohio.

Urias, from Brazil and currently living in Englewood, Florida, and fellow rider Olga "Olga Loca" Surnina, from Kazakhstan, have drawn quite a crowd. First, Olga rides inside the globe alone. Then Melvin rides. Then both Melvin and Olga ride inside the globe. Finally, Melvin rides around with Olga standing in the middle.

It looks pretty dicey, but the pair has had a lot of practice.

"It takes a combination of speed, balance and strength to ride inside the globe," Melvin tells a fan after their show.

Surnina is the latest rider on the team.

"I used to be the pretty lady in the middle, and I decided to prove something," Surnina says.

She practiced riding in the globe for about two years before she started performing, she says.

Melvin says she's gotten pretty good.

"I'd rather be in here than on the street," he says. "I know what she's going to do."
